Preston Roberts – Biography,
The reality TV star was born on July 17, 1957 on American soil. He grew up in Brevard, North Carolina and had the Pisgah National Forest as his childhood playground. He studied at Atlantic Christian College, then at the University of Appalachia, where he obtained his degree in art education. While in college, he made a friend (Eustace Conway) who would prove to be a close friend and fellow Mountain Men star.
Contrary to what most people thought, Preston Roberts’ life doesn’t revolve around the Mountain Men show. He apparently had a busy career, having served 25 years in the Wilkes County school system. During his years in the system, Roberts was recognized for his dedication to service and won “Teacher of the Year” twice.
He has also worked as an instructor at some of the primitive skills gatherings and cultural events scattered across the United States. It was his way of giving back to society after being instructed by some of the best scholars in the country.
Although the traditional Appalachian mountain people were the ones he was most often associated with, Roberts went out of his way to mingle with the Native Americans from whom he learned a great deal. He then became a contemporary traditional singer and dancer. Prior to his disappearance, he worked at Turtle Island Preserve, which he helped set up Eustace. He was on the board, and in his spare time he made knives and went hunting and fishing.
Preston Roberts became a TV personality when he was cast to appear on the Mountain Men reality show on the History Channel. The show, which debuted on May 31, 2012, chronicles the day-to-day activities of a select few who have chosen to live without the comforts of modern facilities. Roberts’ death didn’t stop the camera from rolling as the show continues to run on the History Channel. He breathed his last on July 24, 2017, following complications from a liver tumor that prevented oxygen and the free flow of blood. The tumor was inoperable and within three weeks his body could not go on. Preston passed away in the arms of his beloved wife, Kathleen DuPont McGuire, with whom he enjoyed marital bliss for 42 years.
