She has a brother named Christopher, both raised by their parents, Dick Wiehl, who worked as an FBI agent and Danish mother. As she was growing up, she went to West Valley High School and after graduating; She enrolled at Barnard College where she received her bachelor’s degree in 1983. She also went to the University of Queensland where she received a master’s degree in literature in 1985. Lis went on to study at Harvard Law School where she obtained her law degree in 1987.

After graduating, Lis Wiehl began working as a litigation associate at the law firm Perkins Cole, later practicing until 1990 as a federal prosecutor in the United States Attorney’s Office. While in the DA’s office, Lis served as a legal correspondent and contributor for National Public. Radio.
