The plane carrying players of the Gambia national team had a narrow escape when it made a u-turn to Banjul shortly after takeoff. The flight was en route to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. According to Sports Brief, the plane had to be delayed due to a loss of oxygen.
In a statement from the Gambia Football Federation, it was revealed that the chartered flight carrying the Scorpions to the Africa Cup of Nations had to return to Banjul due to technical problems. The flight was only nine minutes into its journey when the crew detected the issue and promptly requested a return to Banjul. Upon landing, it was determined that there had been a loss of cabin pressure and oxygen.
A new departure time has been arranged for the players and officials. The Scorpions are placed in Group C alongside defending champions Senegal, five-time champions Cameroon, and Guinea.
